Statement of intent
BCC is committed to keeping everyone who works at or visits our offices safe and well. We meet the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 in the UK and the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 in South Africa, and aim to go beyond them where we can.
Overall responsibility for health and safety sits with Steve Prince. Day-to-day responsibility sits with Steve Prince in Kettering and Danae Naidoo in Durban.
What we do
- Risk assessments for each office, reviewed every year and whenever something changes.
- Workstations: display screen equipment assessments for every agent, adjustable chairs and screens, and eye tests paid for where needed.
- Voice and hearing: headsets with acoustic shock protection, water at every desk, and regular breaks away from the phone.
- Wellbeing: realistic targets, scheduled breaks and support for anyone who takes a difficult call.
- Fire and emergencies: trained fire marshals, regular drills and clear evacuation routes at every site.
- First aid: trained first aiders on every shift and stocked first-aid kits.
- Accidents: every accident and near miss is recorded and investigated, and reported where required (RIDDOR in the UK, COIDA and the Department of Employment and Labour in South Africa).
- Training for all staff at induction and when needed after that.
Everyone's part
Everyone must take reasonable care of themselves and others, follow safety instructions, and report hazards, accidents or concerns straight away.
